This week the Green Aspect team had the opportunity to attend advanced industrial network training at Westermo in Sydney.

As the technology surrounding critical rail communications networking advances, we have seen many new forms of technology entering the market and becoming seated as the current standard.

Within the ARTC network we have seen this advancement with the implementation of Westermo’ s Lynx and Wolverine series industrial Network switches, with namely L210-F2G and L208-F2G-S2 network switches utilised for a significant portion of new signalling installations.

Though with advancement in standardisation comes new challenges such as exposure, confidence and competence working with these new products outside of the working network.

With this in mind, the Green Aspect team booked in for the 3 day advanced network switch configuration course run direct from Westermo at their Sydney Office.

The Green Aspect team is made up of many levels of competence within the realm of signal engineering, from graduates to signal electricians to signal engineers, all with varying levels of network configuration experience.

What was great about the course structure and delivery was that even though we were delving into the depths of engineering level network configurations, across multiple switch types and data mediums, the course supported all levels of competence with hands on training from highly skilled communications engineers from the Westermo team.

This course was far from a death by PowerPoint with many in-depth discussions and learning, with a chance for the Green Aspect team to pick the brain of the best in the business.

The course is a very hands on experience with test rigs made up of 4 of Westermo’s various network switches operating over differing data mediums.

As we progressed through the days we were guided through component and system introduction, multiple system login capabilities and familiarisation with Westermo’ s WeConfig Software, which is one of the most intuitive and powerful network configuration tools I have used to date.

Over the three days the team progressed through LACP, RSTP, FRNT, Virtual LANS, Alarms and system logging, Serial over IP and DHCP network protocol configurations.

It was great to meet the team at Westermo and gain the networking skills and network with those involved with these systems. This will ensure Green Aspect have a solid face value with those that can offer so much assistance, if and when we need it in the future.

Playing in the Mud Part 2: Recertifying the North Coast Line after floods

The right tools for the job

This week most of the team at Green Aspect Consulting were called away at short notice to help in the rectification of ARTC’s North Coast line, which required to have all tracks between Maitland and Grafton Train shunted, and all Level Crossing Recertified after the recent weather events.

It is easy to find yourself unprepared for works on short notice and in an unfamiliar area, the North Coast line provides many challenges with poor track access conditions and very limited reception. These conditions can be unforgiving to the unprepared, resulting in the inability to perform the tasks required for the project or must worse being placed in a potentially dangerous situation.

Fortunately, the team at Green Aspect Consulting ensure we all arrive on site more than prepared for the any tasks or conditions that job entails. This week has made me thankful on multiple occasions for all the equipment and training we are provided, without the full recovery equipment and the cellular signal booster this week would have ground to a halt.

Training to play safely in the mud

Green Aspect Consulting Staff undertook training to obtain their Operate four-wheel drive (TLIC2025) competency, a required training course for operating four- wheel drive vehicles in Mine sites and the rail corridor.

All the staff where extremely excited to undertake the training, especially Thomas Spooner who is a self-proclaimed four-wheel drive and hunting enthusiast.

The course involved practical and theory training which incorporated how a vehicle four-wheel drive system works, how to use vehicle traction control and the safety requirements when conducting four-wheel driving.

The practical component of the training was undertaken at Freemans Waterhole, NSW and to all the staff’s excitement was the first day after 10 days of torrential rainfall and flooding throughout NSW. All the tracks where tremendously slippery and covered in mud puddles which made for a fun and interesting day.

The instructor was very supportive and explained how to drive the Green Aspect Consulting Toyota Hilux’s to efficiently straddle wheel ruts, undertake hill climbs, undertake side slopes, and safely drive through puddles/ river crossings.

All staff had a very educational and enjoyable day, gaining confidence to undertake four-wheel driving safely when working in the rail corridor and Mine sites.

Green Aspect Consulting has moved!

Green Aspect Consulting has moved! From working out of a small granny flat at the back of Jarrad's house to a new top floor office in the heart of Wyong' s CBD, Green Aspect has really traded up!

Our new office is located at 3a / 14 Pacific Highway, Wyong, NSW, 2259

The property was purchased in April 2021, with major renovations being slowed due to COVID. The office was finally handed over for occupation in July with furniture and new equipment slowly arriving over the next few weeks.

Thanks to Home and Hosed for their outstanding work and to all the staff at Green Aspect Consulting for their patience.
